4CSCC Fall 2024 Wrap Up

As the Fall 2024 semester wraps up, we extend our sincere thanks to Tuba City Junior High School (TCJHS) for inviting the Four Corners Science and Computing Club (4CSCC) to participate in their Family Math and Science Night on December 18, 2024.

Located on the western edge of the Navajo Nation in Tuba City, Arizona, TCJHS serves students in grades 6 through 8 and is part of the Tuba City Unified School District. The school is committed to expanding learning opportunities and creating a strong academic foundation rooted in community and culture. With a growing focus on STEM, TCJHS is actively working to increase engagement through events like this, aimed at fostering student curiosity and academic success.

The Family Math and Science Night was designed to highlight the practical applications of STEM in everyday life through hands-on learning and collaboration. Activities encouraged families to work together, promoting critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork. By making science and math both fun and accessible, TCJHS seeks to inspire students to pursue further studies and careers in STEM-related fields.

The Four Corners Science and Computing Club (4CSCC), established in 2021 and based at Northern Arizona University (NAU) in Flagstaff, AZ, supports science outreach and computing education among students across Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Coloradoโ€”especially those from schools serving Native American communities. The club provides interactive workshops that integrate coding, data science, and environmental sensing, helping students and their families develop computational thinking skills and explore scientific computing in meaningful ways.

Joining 4CSCC at the event were two additional NAU-affiliated programs: the Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals (ITEP), which provides environmental education and capacity-building support for tribal communities, and the Center for Materials Interfaces in Research & Applications (ยกMIRA!). ยกMIRA! is a research and outreach initiative focused on advancing materials science and broadening participation in STEM. Through interdisciplinary research, ยกMIRA! works to increase access to STEM opportunities for underrepresented groups, including Indigenous students and communities in the Southwest.

Together, these organizations shared a commitment to community engagement and educational equity. Events like this one underscore the importance of connecting families with STEM resources and highlight the value of culturally relevant, hands-on learning experiences.

4CSCC looks forward to continued outreach opportunities and remains dedicated to empowering families and students through scientific computing and STEM education.
