The Cameo Blog Update: A Year in Review
Student Bioinformatician/Data Scientist
Northern Arizona University
Pathogen & Microbiome Institute
Four Corners Science and Computing Club (4CSCC)
Working with numerous professionals from distinct backgrounds has pushed me to become more than a student. Recently I have had the privilege to lead a few STEM presentations and demonstrations. Though the school year had passed, I continued studying during the summer for my masters at NAU. We had the opportunity to mentor fellow Native American STEM students, and their collaborative efforts allow us to expand our 4CSCC Lessons.
As an Arizona native, outdoor adventures are essential growing up. I believe this is the most beautiful part of the Southwest United States in the Four Corners region. Throughout the area we have desert landscapes, yet the terrain shifts from desert to scenic views of national forests and parks – look up more information about the Colorado Plateau.
Being involved in something greater than me has always been the motivation to increase knowledge. Rather than being cooped up indoors for hours, I find that remote work has extensive benefits beyond my comprehension. For one, I do enjoy that I can cook at home, then go for a hike and come back to fulfill my responsibilities. However, some may take advantage of the idea and slack off, as for my job, we must check-in for meetings and deadlines. Remote workers are not always on vacation 24/7, although that is the dream.
During my presentations, I stress on the importance of never forgetting where we come from, pushing students to harness their ability to become greater. We have presented to various Native American communities throughout the Flagstaff area and Navajo Nation. I always mention how lucky I am to be part of a team where they value diversity. Learning from fellow undergraduates and graduates has led me to always seek challenges. I believe that technology will enhance the lives of the students we reach. At most outreach events, I emphasize that being computer literate is a requirement for higher learning, no matter the area of study.
Below are just a few random photos from my camera. Notice they are always outdoors, as a remote worker/student bioinformatician/data scientist, I am fortunate to expand my learning. The opportunities ahead will surely give me a better understanding in the world of STEM.
